Public Policy Forum
Bad Air - The Unseen Hazard
Thursday, November 14
Sponsored by
Loudoun County Environmental Indicators Project (LEIP)
For two months this past summer, ozone readings monitored in Ashburn were recorded at unhealthy levels at a rate of two days per week. On those days, children and the elderly were especially at risk for breathing this unhealthy air. In addition to health concerns, EPA's classification of the Washington area as a "non-attainment" status could force a halt to all federal highway funding for the region. For these reasons alone, it is important that Loudoun County citizens pursue ways to make our air safer.
This GW Public Policy Forum panel will address the specific actions Loudoun County needs to take to reinstate compliance with the EPA. Dr. Luvall will bring his experience working with other jurisdictions that have faced the same challenges currently facing Loudoun County. Dr. Kirby, whose department is charged by federal law with assessing air quality implications for Washington's transportation systems, will bring specific recommendations to achieve attainment status. Supervisor Burton, a member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments' Air Quality Committee and a vocal leader in Loudoun on the need to bring air quality within healthy standards, will bring his perspective and experience on this compelling issue.
