Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration (Ed.D)
Weekend Cohort Format

The mission of the GW Higher Education Administration (HEA) program is to prepare exceptional leaders for administrative, academic, and research positions in four-year and two-year higher education institutions, national and international associations, government agencies, and educational settings in business and industry. The HEA program is known for its excellence in preparing emerging leaders in the field of higher education. Many HEA alumni rise rapidly within their career based on the knowledge, skills, experiences, and research expertise developed during the program.

The Higher Education Administration doctoral program provides students great depth of knowledge and experience in the field of higher education. The foundation courses provide a broad range of knowledge and an introduction to the dissertation. A set of research methods courses provides advanced research skills relevant to the dissertation. A set of elective courses provides specialized knowledge as a support to advanced dissertation research. Finally, there is a dissertation support series to facilitate the research process. The program includes four units totaling 69 semester hours. Curriculum

The program attracts students from broad educational and experiential backgrounds, offering a dynamic interactive experience among all participants. Students from across the United States and throughout the world create a diversity of culture and understanding which enriches the coursework of the program. Most candidates enter the program with demonstrated leadership capabilities in professional settings.

Despite the rigorous course load each semester, most students are able to continue working full-time. The Ed.D. Program at the Virginia Campus is taught in a Weekend Cohort Format. Classes meet all day Friday and Saturday once a month during the fall and spring semesters and once or twice a month during the summer semester. The program requires a commitment of two years' full-time course load, followed by the time necessary to complete the dissertation.
