The purchase includes a 204,000 square-foot facility and nearly 40 acres of land along Route 7 in Ashburn's University Center complex. Under the terms of the agreement, PSINet will lease back a portion of the building for 90 days, and has the option to extend the lease terms. "The acquisition significantly expands GW's ability to broaden our research and academic programs," said John S. Wilson, executive dean of the GW Virginia campus in Loudoun County. "We anticipate using the new facility to work collaboratively with industry and government to build upon our extensive research expertise in transportation safety and advanced information technologies and to develop new research initiatives in emerging areas such as biotechnology." With the acquisition, the Loudoun campus is expanded to 90 acres. The campus opened in 1991 and is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. It houses a 77,000-square foot research and graduate education complex, which offers more than 25 graduate and professional development programs, mostly in technology and management areas. The complex has conducted more than $28 million in funded research in areas such as transportation safety, advanced technology innovation in telecommunications, information technology and security, and the Internet. Key research labs include the America Online Home of the 21st Century, GW NetLab, the Federal Highway Administration's National Crash Analysis Center and Vehicle Simulation Laboratory and the East Coast's largest earthquake simulator. The University last year announced plans to build a 72,000 square-foot facility at the Loudoun campus to house the National Transportation Safety Board Academy. The facility, which will be used to train accident investigators from around the world, will be built on land previously owned by GW and is scheduled to open in 2003.
