JOHN S. WILSON TAPPED AS NEW EXECUTIVE DEAN OF GW'S VIRGINIA CAMPUS AT LOUDOUN-DULLES

WASHINGTON - John S. Wilson, former Massachusetts Institute of Technology administrator, has been named the new executive dean of The George Washington University's Virginia Campus at Loudoun - Dulles. Wilson succeeds Irwin Price, who directed the campus through its first 10 years and oversaw the recent unveiling of three new research laboratories.

"I am extremely pleased that John has agreed to be the second executive dean of the Loudoun - Dulles campus," said Vice President for Academic Affairs Donald Lehman. "His experience at MIT will serve him well in his new responsibilities, as we work to further enhance GW's collaborative activities in Northern Virginia with industry, government, and other educational institutions."

Wilson began his tenure at GW in September serving as a senior assistant vice president under Vice President and Treasurer Louis H. Katz, where his main focus was the University's new strategic initiative. Wilson functioned as a liaison between two committees - one focused on academic excellence and the other on business and service - to help build on GW's excellence and ascend further into the ranks of top tier teaching and research institutions.

Prior to joining the GW community, Wilson served as the director of Foundation Relations and School Development Services, as well as assistant provost for Outreach at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Wilson said he plans on partnering the Virginia Campus with leaders in industry, government, and the local community.

"I intend to optimize all of the University's key mutually beneficial partnerships in order to generate and transfer the kind of knowledge needed to enhance the technological vitality, entrepreneurship, and economic growth of northern Virginia and beyond," Wilson said. "We want to continue the Loudoun-Dulles campus on a path to make it the region's premier collaborative research university."

Irwin Price is leaving GW to become chancellor of the Daytona Beach campus of Embry-Riddle University. As the first executive dean of the Loudoun - Dulles campus, Irwin Price forged partnerships with industry that led to cutting-edge research and educational programs in areas such as telecommunications, information technology, computer graphics, transportation safety and management of technology.

"I extend to Irwin my very best wishes for great success in his new position," Lehman said. "His achievements in developing and positioning the Loudoun - Dulles Graduate Education and Research Campus provide him the experience for this new endeavor."

GW's Loudoun-Dulles Campus, a 77,000 square foot, $25 million graduate education and research center, serves an international technology and management community. Celebrating its tenth anniversary since opening in August 1991, the 50-acre campus has grown from modest beginnings with 200 enrollments and $50,000 in funded research to a strong, vigorous cluster of academic programs with more than 3,000 enrollments and funded research that tops $28 million.
