Computational biology is a field that brings together elements of computer science and biology. It is where big data intersects with science and where much of biology can be described by mathematical equations. GW’s pharmacogenomics program explores fashioning individualized drug therapies. It wasn’t long ago when the idea of tailoring drug therapy based on a patient’s genetic makeup or distinguishing which drug might be most effective in battling a person’s cancer would be relegated to the pages of a science fiction novel. But today, it’s called science. Pharmacogenomics (PGx) to be exact. The marriage of pharmacology and genetics is a union that spawns research aimed at personalizing drug therapies and being able to predict drug responses based on a patient’s genetic makeup. MORE

GO GIRL (Genomic Opportunities for Girls In Research Labs) is an educational outreach program designed to provide a unique opportunity for young women interested in gaining hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology and genomics. A new blended-learning format gives more flexibility to students. It takes GW nursing student Brittany Wilson about an hour to drive from her home in Manassas, Va. to GW’s School of Nursing (SON) on the Virginia Science and Technology Campus. Now, thanks to a $655,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration, Ms. Wilson gets to stay home once a month in her pajamas and watch a recorded lecture online instead of driving to campus and attending class in-person. A group of students and their teachers huddle in a garage bay with a completely disassembled Toyota Yaris on one side and big-screen LCD monitors and computer equipment on the other. Their task is to analyze accident reports, review crash tests, and learn how computer simulations assess potential injuries to the vehicle occupants. Down the hall another group of students spend the morning integrating mechanical, electrical, and computer software systems through a microcontroller as they design and build their own robots. MORE

The university, in partnership with U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., hosted the 10th District Congressional Art Show March 29 through April 20. The exhibit, on display at the GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus featured 260 works by 167 area high school students, representing 24 schools throughout the 10th Congressional District. Internationally Recognized Physicist Speaks on Campus in Conjunction with Conference

Dr. Rolland P. Johnson, an internationally recognized particle accelerator physicist, spoke on campus April 6 about his work in the development of Accelerator-Driven Subcritical Reactor (ADSR) nuclear power plants, which have the capability to operate in an inherently safe mode, generate no greenhouse gases, and produce minimal nuclear waste with no byproducts. MORE

GW ‘Teachers In Industry’ Project Turns Local Teachers Into Interns

Teachers in Industry Project (GWTIP), hosted by the university's Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, Va., paired 17 teachers with nine local industry leaders. Through full-time externships with local businesses, teachers learned what role STEM content and 21st century business practices play in turning wastewater into clean water for residents, creating cyber defenses for global networks, designing “green” systems for the construction industry and developing the latest advances in medical care. The GW Board of Trustees voted to approve the formation of the GW School of Nursing. The new school, which has 30 faculty members already in place and expects to hire more top-level professionals in the field, will be housed on both GW's Foggy Bottom Campus and on its Virginia Science and Technology Campus. Four Bachelor of Science in Nursing students traveled to Gloucester County, Va., where they traded latex exam gloves for rugged work gloves. The students joined a team of volunteers from the Gloucester Tornado Recovery Group to aid the community after it was ravaged, April 17, by a tornado blamed for two fatalities and millions of dollars in damage. "I'm glad that George Washington University's presence in the Commonwealth is growing stronger," said Virginia Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson, who spoke at the official opening of the lab on Sept. 13, at the GW Virginia Scieince and Technology Campus. The event showcased the new 3000-square-foot nursing simulation lab and the $23,000 in equipment contributed by Reston Hospital Center, HCA Virginia. 'Teachers in Industry Project' Pairs Teachers with Businesses for Lessons in STEM Careers and Curriculum

The George Washington University Teachers in Industry Project (GWTIP), hosted by the University's Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn, Va., paired 16 Loudoun County Public School middle and high school teachers with seven local industry leaders to increase science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning in the classroom. Robert H. SmithBenefactor of University Center
and Virginia Campus Dies

The man whose generosity launched the GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus has died. Philanthropist and GW Trustee Emeritus Robert H. Smith, who died in December at age 81, donated the first 50 acres for the campus. He had envisioned a development in Loudoun County anchored by a university. He approached The George Washington University to be that university.

In 1990, when Smith was president of Charles E. Smith Construction Inc. and general partner of Washington Engineering Associates, he presented Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, then president of GW, with the landmark gift. This land was part of a 576-acre tract know as North Bles Farm. Exploration Hall opened to students in the fall of 1991. MORE

The University recently announced the launch of GWorld 2.0, which enhances Campus security and adds additional features to the GWorld card program. Nearly 100 members of the NSF/Industry/University Center for High-Performance Reconfigurable Computing (CHREC) gathered at the GW Virginia Science and Technology Campus recently for a mid-year workshop and Industrial Advisory Board meeting. National Science Foundation representatives Dr. Irene Qualters and Dr. Rita Rodrigues presented, followed by faculty and student project progress reports. Young women (rising 10th, 11th, or 12th graders) have a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in molecular biology and genomics. This opportunity is made possible through a partnership between The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, the Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy at Shenandoah University, Loudoun County Public Schools, and supported in part by a generous grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).
